Library…

Well, at long last my little library is back online. The link is in the right hand menu, as is a little preview of the books in my to-read, currently reading, and recently read lists. (Correction - I’ve decided to cut it down to just the books that I’m currently reading. You can still find the rest by viewing the full library though.)

Of course, they are slightly out of date at the moment, but it’s still all good!
There are also some issues with the gallery design - I’ll be poking at these another time.

Away!

I’m away in Hinton until Sunday evening for a youth leadership conference. No internet, but lots of mountains.

Sounds awesome! :P

Posters!

I said I while back that I did a few posters for the school’s upcoming performances in the Musical Theatre and Drama classes. I had a few different ideas I wanted to try after last semester’s poster - namely, doing them vertically. I also wanted to go for a more modern style. While I never managed to get a grunge effect going (I need to work on that), I think they came out reasonably well. Now if only I had created them at 300dpi instead of 72… ><

Adobe, your licensing is messed!

We all know that Adobe software is expensive. Okay, it’s designed for professional use, and is priced as such. I can somewhat understand that. However, I am a student.

Fortunately for me, Adobe has student licensing options. Great!

But hang on a second. I’m a high school student in Canada.

Adobe’s licensing on their software is such that because I happen to be going to high school in the wrong country I cannot get the same discount on software that a preschool student in the UK can!

Take a look at the two websites:
First, the North America site: http://www.adobe.com/education/students/
And now the UK site: http://www.adobe.com/uk/education/students/

Take a closer look at the “Eligibility Criteria” from the UK site.

Users that qualify as Educational End Users as defined below are eligible to purchase only one product of its type, per academic year.

“Educational Establishment” means:

  1. Accredited public or private primary, secondary or higher education school providing full-time instruction. This includes nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, grammar schools, schools for the handicapped, teacher training colleges, technical colleges, further education colleges, research institutes, adult education centres, and State run or State subsidised facilities for the re-training of the unemployed.

Qualified Examples

Qualified individuals who acquire Educational Software Products for their own personal use but not for further distribution or transfer and who have presented appropriate identification of current status as:

  • Students enrolled at an accredited public or private primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction

So that’s pretty simple. Any student registered full time in a nursery school (preschool), primary school (elementary school), secondary school (junior/senior high schools), high school (another term for secondary school), or grammar school (can be either a primary school or a secondary school - just under a different name) can qualify for the student discount (I’m not looking at University/colleges here.)

If we go to the US site, we eventually end up on this page:
http://www.adobe.com/about/openoptions/student.html

Under the Student Licensing Option, a higher education institution enrolled in the Adobe Open Options CLP volume licensing program can purchase selected Adobe software at significant discounts for redistribution or resale to students. The process sets up amazing rewards for students and the institution:

So - what you’re saying Adobe, is that just because I happen to live on in this continent called North America, I, as a high school student, can’t get a discount on your software that a student who can’t even use it can get just because they live in the UK!?

Come on! A student is still a student whether they live in the US, or the UK!

Sure you do Adobe - sure you do.
